Journalists unsafe in Morang; Protest against local administration Morang, located in the eastern region of Nepal, is increasingly becoming the unsafe place for journalists to collect and publish news. Earlier, Maoist cadres misbehaved with journalists of Kantipur publications during their indefinite general strike on May 7.
They misbehaved with journalists at different places of Kathmandu including Ratnapark, Padmodaya Mod, Koteshwar and Maharajgunj. Journalists Jagat Nepal, Saligram Tiwari, Toya Dahal along with others were misbehaved, according to Freedom Forum.
Meanwhile, Maoist leader member Jiban Gautam has threatened to take action against journalists who opposed the Maoists' agitation.
Speaking at a party program in Dhangadhi, Kailai, on Saturday, Gautam said the party would "correct" those media persons, rights activists, members of civil society and businesspersons who were "unsupportive" towards the party's agitation.
"We have marked the journalists who did not support us and we will correct them soon,” said Gautam.
Freedom Forum has strongly condemned the mentioned incidents saying they are against press freedom and freedom of expression.
The Forum urges the Maoists to respect the norms of press freedom and adhere to constitutional provisions which guarantees press freedom.
The Forum has also asked the government to investigate the incidents and bring the guilty to the books at the earliest. The Forum calls on the agitating Maoist cadres to exercise tolerance and show respect to press freedom and freedom.
